  University of Toronto - Varsity Centre Redevelopment, Toronto, ON

Owner: University of Toronto
Architect: Diamond + Schmitt Architects Inc.

  • Multiphased redevelopment of this prominent Bloor Street stadium site to create a multi functional sports and training facility on the University's St. George Campus;
  • This $56M sports complex was envisioned by University of Toronto planners as a versatile centre for physical fitness for the downtown campus. The project consists of a 5,000 seat open air stadium with a new southern entrance, playing field and track that is “bubbled” and segregated for multi-sport use during the winter period. This project was complex from a site coordination standpoint as it was immediately adjacent to two other active construction sites - the Royal Conservatory of Music and the ROM. Constant coordination was required to ensure safe and efficient site access, Bloor Street traffic conditions and material/equipment handling on and off the project site. This project is unique in that it houses a multi-sport synthetic turf playing surface which received FIFA certification for soccer use. The surrounding track also received IAAF certification. In this assignment, OPM managed a diverse team of design specialists comprised of sports venue functional programmers, planners, architects, mechanical, electrical engineers, structural and civil engineers, environment consultants, landscape architects, television and lighting/audio consultants;
  • The project continues through its subsequent phases within budget and schedule.
