- Funding conditions and user group scheduling associated with the project required renovation work to be substantially complete by June 2011. The project’s escalated delivery timeline required a highly controlled “fast track” approach. Overall success hinged on applying solid project management fundamentals in communicating and coordinating the validation and incorporation of all programmatic elements into the scope of work in full accordance with budget, schedule and project implementation requirements;
- OPM’s project management experience in the development of state of the art learning environments proved to be key to understanding the creative design and technical implementation requirements of the project and in establishing a productive and success oriented working environment for the project team;
- In implementing this project, the AGO has undertaken a substantial $25M enhancement of its art education program. The budget includes $18M for the renovation and reconstruction of existing educational infrastructure and $7M to support programs and endowment funding;
- The Weston Family Learning Centre includes the following key programmatic elements; an active education commons designed to accommodate 80,000 students annually in an integrated and flexible learning and teaching environment; a youth centre; hands-on learning centre for young children and their parents; a community gallery; teaching studios; technology supported seminar rooms; an artist-in-residence studio; a satellite art conservation lab and access to the vast AGO collection;
- Key funding partners for the project are the Government of Canada Infrastructure Stimulus Fund and the W. Garfield Weston Foundation.
In accordance with AGO’s visioning and the project’s functional program, the facility comprises 30,000 to 35,000 ft2 in renovation to existing space plus 5,000 ft2 in new construction within the envelope of the existing building.
